Chapter Nine

Brett picked up his gloves. “I’m off!”

“Again?” The tone was resentful.

Brett tipped his chin. “My dear Ingrid, this is my day off. Yours was yesterday, and I coped with how many guests?”

“Don’t deny you enjoyed doing it.”

Briefly, he contemplated the pouting ruby lips, pouting for his benefit. Once, a long time ago, he had almost made a fool of himself on account of those sensual lips. He didn’t really know why he had given her this job. Desperation for a capable manager or, most likely, to reassure his father and his step-mother who worried about her wayward daughter. “Of course, I did. Took them all out for the weekend. Great time.”

“I suppose you’re heading precisely two miles north-west!”

There was venom beneath the sweetness, but Brett didn’t heed it.

“As a matter of fact, I’m going to town.”

“Why can’t we spend the day together? Chris is perfectly capable of running Wolf Hollow on his own for a day.”

Her pleading tone grated on his nerves.

“Grow up, Ingrid.” He zipped up his parka and pulled on his woolen cap. “It’s been a long time since you took off for your great adventure.”

“What if my mistake has haunted me ever since?”

“Then I suggest you see a shrink. Ciao!”

In the bright sunshine, his irritation melted away. He climbed in his truck and sent it roaring down the road. His positive frame of mind helped him conduct his business in record time.

He called in at the municipal office to talk to the administrator. “I’ve a question for you, Don. How come there is no land access to my lot B-North on the land registry?”

“Ah, you too.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’ve already had that enquiry. These lots weren’t drawn up by Council. The Crown sold them piecemeal. The rule on that side of the lake was that each parcel of land had to have lake frontage. Edmund Noles didn’t bother to buy the lot on the north side of his property. It remained empty until you came along.”

“How about pushing the road through?”

Don shook his head. “It stopped at Edmund’s land because of the rocky outcrop.”

“Could be blasted off.” Brett put his finger on the map.

Don chuckled. “Too expensive just for letting you ride to that piece of land. Besides, it’d block access to the lake for Ed, er, sorry, Ms. Riley. Can’t do that. It’s in the by-law that the lots all have to have lake frontage.”

Brett scratched his head. “Couldn’t we amend the by-law?”

“You’re kidding! We’d be deluged with requests from land-bound cottagers who came after all the lake lots were gone.”

“Okay, I had to try.”

“Surely it’s not a big thing?”

"My manager seems to think it is. It’s a bit inconvenient, to say the least.”

Brett took his leave and strode toward the marina. Acquaintances seemed to materialize from nowhere to delay him. He dealt graciously with everyone until he could bolt to his vehicle parked near the ice-bound dock.

He drove back to Eagle Point, passing the lodge without a sideways glance. Brett slowed down to a crawl when Vanessa’s cabin came in sight.
